Helping out where we can...
The death toll from the bush-fires has hit the 200 mark (and that number is expected to rise) more than 750 homes have been lost.
Ross and I have been talking about how (and where) we can help, and we have decided that one way we can help is by fostering a cat. Animal shelters and vets (etc) have been stretched to their limits since the bush-fires and there are more injured/homeless animals coming in every day.
I have been in touch with a Vet near one of the fire-effected area's (Coldstream for those who know Victoria) and there is an older male cat who we have decided to foster.
He
arrives at our house on Friday, so we have a couple of days to get a
room sorted out for him, we'll have to slowly introduce him to our two cats, Maddy and Moe.
Due to his docile nature, the Foster Co-ordinator believes he has a family somewhere, but because he isn't microchipped nor wearing a collar there is no way of tracking them down.
This is him:
As the shelter doesn't name rescued cats, he doesn't really have a name* yet, so maybe naming him will be first on the list of things we'll need to do, I've given that job to TK.Wish us luck, I hope it all goes smoothly!
*Well, I'm sure his previous owners named him, we just don't know what that name is!

He's a very pretty cat. I wish you luck! (I know my cat wouldn't be having any of it!)
What's the chance someone will send a picture around looking for him?
Oh, this is so sad. Some poor family is missing their kitty. Just one MORE horrible thing to endure, above and beyond losing their home/town/etc....
"Foster" is different from "adopt"...So are you hoping that the owners will be found? I know that after Hurricane Katrina completely ruined New Orleans, there was a pet rescue web site set up to reunite people with their pets.
@KameraSutra - Yes, we are hoping that if we can't find his original owners, that we will at least find a permanent home for him.
@andyglasser - Every effort will be made to find his owners, the place we got him from will also continue to look.
Good for you guys. Fostering is so incredibly important.
I wish I could help out with something like that, but with 4 almost grown boxers, and a cat already, don't think we exactly got the room here. We have been donating things like clothes and stuff, and they are looking for smaller things still like dogleads and collars, and for the people some of the basic necessities like toiletries etc.
I was helping in the call centre last week and the number of people wanting to donate is just amazing. We've had people wanting to donate cars, houses, their time to help rebuild etc... The response has just been overwhelming. I even had someone want to donate their fridge.
Thank god for people like you who can do these things like fostering.
Peace and love
