In the house I grew up in rally driving was a sport that was loved.
New Zealand rally driver/champion Possum Bourne was a name that I heard often, so often in fact that I feel like I know him, like he is a favourite uncle that I've never met, an uncle whose legend is spoken of with great pride.
He was in a league of his own. Top of his field.
A hero.
Last night Possum Bourne died.
He’d been in a medically induced coma with serious head and chest injuries since an accident last week, and yesterday his family decided it was time to turn off the life support.
My heart is with his family. And my own, because I know my father will especially feel his loss.
More about Possum later.
Update:
Busy day!
Back to back meetings from 9am - 1pm with only 10mins break in between, then onto a tram to Ross' work and into the car, and off to a handover meeting for the house.
Anyways, back to Possum.
Peter (Possum) Bourne
1956 - 2003
May he rest in Peace.
The crash that claimed his life happened during the lead up to his favourite rally, the New Zealand 'Race to the Sky'. Possum had been looking over the course and was coming down the mountain when his car was hit by another competitor going up the mountain.
According to reports, the uphill bound car may have strayed to the wrong side of the road, neither car was doing more than 50kms per hour. Possum was wearing a seat belt and his air bag inflated.

how sad...
his legend will live on of course.
i love the name possum.
May Possum indeed rest in peace. I think many of the Finns would feel the same way if one of the rally driver legends here passed away.
It is though weird that for a such small nation, there're more than plenty of rally drivers from Finland. Not to mention those in other motor sport classes...
sending you some love.... you gettin' it?
oops. i meant to do a heart... not lips! dangit!
